RTI (also known as MTSS) is a process for ensuring academic and behavioral success for all students by tailoring instruction to meet individual student needs through:

• school-wide screening (LinkIt, spelling inventories, diagnostic assessments, common assessments, etc.) to identify students in need of academic and behavioral interventions

• research-based instruction and interventions provided by highly qualified teachers;

• systematic, frequent progress monitoring and data-driven decision-making; and

• a multi-tiered system of interventions which increase in intensity in response to student needs.

Schools use data to identify students at risk for poor learning outcomes, monitor student progress, provide evidence-based interventions and adjust the intensity and nature of those interventions depending on a student’s responsiveness.

Tier 1 (80% of students)=All students receive high quality, differentiated instruction.

Tier 2 (15% of students)=Some students need and receive a second learning experience and extra attention (e.g., targeted, small group instruction)

Tier 3 (5% of students)=Very few students need and receive an intensive learning experience – in addition to previous learning experiences in Tier 1 & 2.
